Washington Examiner Op-Ed Written By LI Staffer: Lessons from 1994 for GOP
November 1, 2010, Arlington, VA—Washington Examiner op-ed entitled, “Lessons from 1994 for GOP” was written by the Leadership Institute's very own Director of Political & New Media Training Chris Malagisi. The piece highlights lessons the GOP learned in 1994 and ought to carry into the elections this week.Mr. Malagisi said, “The lesson for Republicans is to keep their legislative dreams realistic. While they might not have the votes to overhaul Obamacare, they do have the power of the purse in the House and can defund it. Keeping their legislative priorities in check, Republicans will set themselves up for further gains in the Senate and perhaps the presidency in 2012.”The four lessons, as stated by Mr. Malagisi are: Follow through on promises; Keep communicating with the public; Beware of the ‘Politics of Personal Destruction'; and Obama is still the president.Read the full op-ed here. The Leadership Institute is an educational foundation whose mission is to increase the number and effectiveness of conservative activists and leaders in the public policy process. LI Board Member: What Is A Leader?
Lauren Hart
October 27, 2010
LI Board Member: What Is A Leader?
October 27, 2010, Arlington, VA—Leadership Institute Board Member and SABER Communications, Inc. President Mike Rothfeld wrote an insightful piece about three components of leadership—planning, preparing, and acting.Below are Mike Rothfeld's thoughts on leadership that are shared with his permission.“Dear Liberty Activist,Seriously, look behind you. Is anyone following you?No, no, this is not some Gnomes of Zurich super-duper conspiracy email.I mean politically ... is anyone following you?Because if no one is following you, YOU ARE NOT A LEADER.And if you are not a leader, then you are not doing what is needed to make a difference.Leadership has three components: Planning, Preparing and Acting.Take a minute to think about each one.PLANNINGGeneral Dwight Eisenhower said, "In war, plans are useless, but planning is essential."So what is planning?Planning is researching a problem, determining a solution and figuring out what needs to be done to achieve the desired outcome.Pin-headed academics, think-tankers and bloggers for the most part camp out here. Endlessly debating and explaining ad nauseum what MUST be done. Unfortunately, since they are not leaders, they begin and end here and little or nothing is achieved.PREPARINGPreparing is the most neglected component of political leadership.Preparing is assembling the concrete things needed to achieve a plan.At the top of the list in politics is money. The old political saying remains all-too-true, "You cannot save the world, if you cannot pay the bills." And almost EVERYTHING costs money: Computers, pizza for volunteers, paper, postage, gasoline ... you get the point.Next after money -- lists. Lists of people who are interested -- or may be interested -- in the issue, movement or candidate you are preparing to help. Then comes everything else you may need (note how many cost money, or its cousin, time spent learning): Computers, programs, graphic art skills, writing, paper, postage, volunteers, opposition research, etc.Bureaucrats live in the preparing world.Too few political leaders spend their time and talent in this critical area. Through 25 years of political activism, I will say without hesitation that "the failure to prepare is the primary cause of political failure."ACTINGAh, yes, good old action. Let's go DO SOMETHING, baby, RIGHT NOW!Bringing your plans and preparations together in real time, at just the right moments and in just the right ways is what action is all about. Many would-be political leaders freak out here. You have to SPEND the money, TARGET the Senator, MAIL the letters, SEND the emails ... and you have to do it NOW. Not ready? Too bad. Not sure? Tough. Too tired? Get over it. Kids have (gag) soccer? They miss it.On the other hand, politicians LOVE to act. Never mind that they have no plan and made no preparations, they are ready to go do something, right now. Here's a giveaway (a "tell" as gamblers say): Any political or campaign statement that starts with "We need to ..." or "We just have to ..." or "We gotta find a way to ..." is virtually always followed by something metaphysically impossible to achieve.THE CONCLUSION OF THE MATTERLeaders bring together all three: Planning, preparing and acting. For the leader, there is no lying down in the area you are most comfortable in.For the leader, there is no sloughing off the parts you are uncomfortable doing (you know, like fundraising). For the leader, there is ONLY the commitment to excellence in every aspect of the work.So I ask you, Are you a leader?Best regards,Mike RothfeldFoundation For Applied Conservative Leadership”The Leadership Institute is an educational foundation whose mission is to increase the number and effectiveness of conservative activists and leaders in the public policy process. Politics Daily: Hiring Staff for New Members of Congress? Look to Morton Blackwell’s Rules
October 26, 2010, Arlington, VA—Online newspaper Politics Daily Columnist Matt Lewis referred to LI President Morton Blackwell's Laws of the Public Policy Process in hiring Capitol Hill staff. “Conservative leader Morton Blackwell, for whom I previously worked, has a few rules for the public policy process that might be helpful for tea party conservatives who win election next week,” Politics Daily Columnist Matt Lewis said.“One of Blackwell's rules is: "Personnel is policy." Another: "Hire at least as many to the right of you as to the left of you." It seems the GOP party bosses are hoping Republicans who get elected this Tuesday will ignore this advice,” Lewis said.To read the full Politics Daily story, please visit here. The Leadership Institute is an educational foundation whose mission is to increase the number and effectiveness of conservative activists and leaders in the public policy process. Your Opinion Needed: Make an Impact this Election Cycle by Writing Your Own Op-Ed

Your Opinion Needed: Make an Impact this Election Cycle by Writing Your Own Op-Ed
October 25, 2010, Arlington, VA—Believe it or not, voters in your community are interested in what you have to say about candidates and issues. Think about it, when you need a dentist who do you ask for advice? You will most likely ask someone you know and trust in your community. So, it only makes sense that voters want to know how their neighbors feel about the candidates and issues that impact their lives, especially right before an election. Writing an Op-Ed for you local paper can help bring attention and credibility to the candidate or cause of your choice in your community. It may even convince some un-decided voters to agree with your point of view. Before you get started on writing your own Op-Ed, please keep the following seven points in mind.1. Relevant -- Make sure your Op-Ed is relevant to what is going on in your state or local community. You may want to weigh in on the national political environment, but you are an expert at what is going on in your community. So, choose a topic that is important to the readers in your area.2. Concise -- Be short and concise. Your Op-Ed should be no longer than 700 words in length. If you can get it down to 500 words even better. Space in most publications is very valuable real estate and it is rare that anything longer than this will be published. Also, choose only two main points and don't get off topic.3. Clear -- Write clearly and use language that a majority of people understand. So, please don't use technical language or acronyms.4. Connect -- Emotionally connect with readers by personifying the issue you are writing about. For example, if you are writing about taxes, make sure you explain how taxes affect businesses and families in your area.5. Research -- Back up your examples with rational and broadly accepted facts and statistics. At this point before the election, editors have their antennae up for attack pieces and will most likely not include your letter if it resembles one.6. Recognize -- Acknowledge the other side. There is a chance that the editors will also run a piece from someone opposing your point of view on the same page. You don't have to spend a lot of time on the opposing view point, but briefly touch on it.7. Reinforce -- Summarize your message and tie it back to your main point in the opening. Use the ending as one last chance to reinforce your message.Remember, you know what issues are most important to you and your neighbors. You know who will best serve your community's interests once elected. So, voice your opinion now before it is too late. There is still time to make a big impact on this election. The Leadership Institute is an educational foundation whose mission is to increase the number and effectiveness of conservative activists and leaders in the public policy process. Brigham Young University Student Praises LI’s Youth Leadership School
October 18, 2010, Arlington, VA— Brigham Young University sophomore political science major from Lebanon, Tennessee Taylor Bambas learned much from the October 15th Leadership Institute's Youth Leadership School in Provo, Utah. Taylor Bambas wrote, “I just got home from an intense two-day Youth Leadership School put on by the Leadership Institute in Orem. The Leadership Institute is an awesome non-profit organization which trains young conservative political leaders. Since LI was founded by the conservative legend Morton Blackwell in 1979, they have turned out conservative political leaders left and right. If you're conservative and at all interested in a political career you NEED to check it out. I gained more practical knowledge about political activism in 2 days at LI than I have in 3 semesters as a political science student. It is a perfect complement to my college education. I feel empowered and ready to go! Anybody need a campaign manager?!? Just kidding. Though I'm not on a political campaign currently, I'm hoping to apply the principles I've learned to a local advocacy group, the Girl Effect, which I'm trying to start here in Provo.” The Leadership Institute wishes Taylor well in her studies at Brigham Young and in her future career. The Leadership Institute's mission is to increase the number and effectiveness of conservative activists and leaders in the public policy process. To accomplish this mission, the Institute identifies, recruits, trains, and places conservatives in government, politics, and the media. LI has trained more than 90,000 people since its founding in 1979 and currently offers 40 program courses. For more information, please visit: http://www.leadershipinstitute.org -30-
