December 13, 2010, Arlington, VA—Last week 71 individuals from 20 states and two countries joined us in our Arlington training facility for a week-long school on campaign management. With over 23 distinguished faculty teaching on various subjects ranging from campaign finance to media relations to grassroots and volunteer efforts, students left prepared for managing their campaigns for the upcoming next election cycle. Below are testimonies of three LI graduates from last week's campaign manager school. Ruthie Thompson said, “I have been able to volunteer for many campaigns and even made my first attempt at a fundraiser for Sharron Angle. I just wish that I was able to take this course prior to me holding that fundraiser. Although I am a very successful realtor, my heart and my passion is with the conservative movement and that is a driving force for my future plans. I want to get involved. I no longer want to sit on the sidelines and watch my country being taken over. December 6, 2010, Arlington, VA— On December 6, 1884 the construction of the Washington Monument in the District of Columbia was completed. It's claim to fame runs much deeper than just being the tallest structure in the nation's capitol.This prominent monument located on the National Mall is one of the oldest and most favorite attractions in DC. It honors America's first President George Washington who led the country to independence in the American Revolution. The 1790 Residence Act afforded President Washington the task of appointing a designer for the new national capitol. Pierre Charles L'Enfant's 1791 design made the monument the city's centerpiece. However, it was not until 1836 that Robert Mill's architectural design was chosen by the Washington National Monument Society.While the Society laid the cornerstone in 1848, it was not until 1884 that the structure was completed. This delay in construction was in part because of various events like the Civil War.The monument stands 555 feet and 5 1/8 inches tall, having a 30-mile view from on top. December 2, 2010, Arlington, VA—The lighting of the National Menorah took place last night outside the White House to kick off the beginning of the Hanukkah eight day holiday. The Leadership Institute wishes LI supporters, graduates and friends a very happy Festival of Lights. Last night many gathered outside the White House Ellipse to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah or Chanukah by the lighting the National Menorah. The Master of Ceremonies Rabbi Levi Shemtov was joined by his father Rabbi Abraham Shemtov, and Office of Management and Budget Director Jacob “Jack” Lew—the highest ranking Jewish member of the president's cabinet—in lighting the 30-foot National Menorah.Hanukkah's eight day celebration commemorates the rededication of the Jewish Second Temple in Jerusalem in 164 B.C. after its desecration by the Syrian-Greeks in the Maccabean Revolt. The word Hanukkah means “dedication” in Hebrew and the holiday begins on the Hebrew calendar's 25th day of Kislev. December 1, 2010, Arlington, VA—University of Virginia student Wes Siler with the help of the Leadership Institute received university funding for their conservative student group after being denied funding from the students' association and the university president.Wes Siler and his UVA friends began the Burke Society to promote conservatism on campus. Their “mission is to host speakers and organize events to further conservative values and thought on grounds.” Their efforts to become a university funded and recognized student organization was denied by the “liberal student association” and the university president.FIRE, an organization devoted to defending individual rights in higher education, worked with LI in drafting a letter to the UVA president. Within ten minutes of receiving this letter, the university president called the student council president instructing him to allocate money to the Burke Society and give them the right to associate. The Burke Society has worked to get a conservative course called “Conservatism 101” on campus so students can learn conservative ideology as well. November 24, 2010, Arlington, VA--This Thanksgiving we stop working to reflect and give thanks with family and friends for the blessings of the past year. Read on for a Thanksgiving history lesson and a Leadership Institute reflection.The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of International Information Programs' project America.gov stated in an article, "Thanksgiving is popularly traced to a 1621 feast shared by the English Pilgrims who founded the Plymouth Colony (located in present-day Massachusetts) and members of the Wampanoag Indian tribe."The America.gov article continues by stating, "The Pilgrims had arrived in 1620, crossing the Atlantic Ocean to separate themselves from the official Church of England and practice freely their particular form of Puritanism. Arriving at Plymouth Colony too late to grow many crops, and lacking fresh food, the Pilgrims suffered terribly during the winter of 1620-1621. Half the colony died from disease. The following spring, local Wampanoag Indians taught the colonists how to grow corn (maize) and other local crops, and also helped the newcomers master hunting and fishing. The Wampanoag were a people with a sophisticated society who had occupied the region for thousands of years, says the National Museum of the American Indian. Because they harvested bountiful crops of corn, barley, beans and pumpkins the Pilgrims had much to be thankful for in the fall of 1621.""The legacy of giving thanks, particularly with a shared feast, has survived the centuries. Several U.S. presidents -- starting with George Washington in 1789 -- issued Thanksgiving proclamations, but it wasn't until President Abraham Lincoln's 1863 proclamation that Thanksgiving became an annual national holiday.
