A few thoughts on resumes

A few thoughts on resumes
Some of the resume tips I'm about to list may seem like common sense to many of you, but we can always use a refresher, even when it comes to the most basic of guidelines. So, after looking at hundreds of resumes, here are the reminders for which I see a great need for review.• Keep your resume on one page. I know this is hard for people with 10+ years of experience, and there are certainly exceptions to this rule, but remember, most recruiters give resumes about 14 seconds the first time through. You want your most important information to be seen, so get it on one page to ensure nothing is overlooked.• Unless you are still in college or have graduated within the last year, always list your education at the bottom of the page.• Do not list your high school information on your resume unless you are creating one while you are still in high school.• Be consistent with punctuation. Either use periods at the end of each line or don't. Just decide on one format and stick with it.• Do NOT put a picture of yourself on your resume. It's not a good idea, don't do it.• Line your dates up on the right-hand side of the document. And be sure they are all aligned and consistent. This makes your resume much easier to read in that first 14 seconds.• List the organization, company, or office you worked/work for first, and list your title in that office directly below. Use bold or italics to differentiate between the place and the title, but always use the same font. That goes for your entire document. Nothing screams lack of attention to detail like two or three different font types and sizes in one resume.• Keep it simple. Use the standard bullet to list your responsibilities, accomplishments, and successes under each title you have had or currently have. Resist the urge to use fancy diamond, rectangular, or heart-shaped bullets. The standard black dots will suffice.• Use the whole page. Recruiters do not like to see a lot of white space on a resume. You have one 8 by 11 ½ page to sell yourself to a potential employer. So use all the space you have.• In direct contrast to the bullet above, do not use microscopic font. Anything smaller than 11 is too small, and often recruiters won't bother to read the resume if they have to squint to see what is on the page.• Finally, in your bullets under each place of employment, list your successes and accomplishments rather than just your responsibilities. Quantify your results at each organization or office. Numbers jump out on the page and are proof that you were an asset to that particular employer. I could go on, but I'll save that for another post. Happy resume building! >

Washington Monument: America’s Centerpiece Completed 126 Years Ago Today
December 6, 2010, Arlington, VA— On December 6, 1884 the construction of the Washington Monument in the District of Columbia was completed. It's claim to fame runs much deeper than just being the tallest structure in the nation's capitol. This prominent monument located on the National Mall is one of the oldest and most favorite attractions in DC. It honors America's first President George Washington who led the country to independence in the American Revolution. The 1790 Residence Act afforded President Washington the task of appointing a designer for the new national capitol. Pierre Charles L'Enfant's 1791 design made the monument the city's centerpiece. However, it was not until 1836 that Robert Mill's architectural design was chosen by the Washington National Monument Society. While the Society laid the cornerstone in 1848, it was not until 1884 that the structure was completed. This delay in construction was in part because of various events like the Civil War.The monument stands 555 feet and 5 1/8 inches tall, having a 30-mile view from on top. The monument is the tallest structure in DC and has thousands of visitors each year that ride to the top and gaze over their federal city. For more information about the Washington Monument, please click here. The Leadership Institute is an educational foundation whose mission is to increase the number and effectiveness of conservative activists and leaders in the public policy process. Happy Hanukkah from LI
December 2, 2010, Arlington, VA—The lighting of the National Menorah took place last night outside the White House to kick off the beginning of the Hanukkah eight day holiday. The Leadership Institute wishes LI supporters, graduates and friends a very happy Festival of Lights. Last night many gathered outside the White House Ellipse to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah or Chanukah by the lighting the National Menorah. The Master of Ceremonies Rabbi Levi Shemtov was joined by his father Rabbi Abraham Shemtov, and Office of Management and Budget Director Jacob “Jack” Lew—the highest ranking Jewish member of the president's cabinet—in lighting the 30-foot National Menorah.Hanukkah's eight day celebration commemorates the rededication of the Jewish Second Temple in Jerusalem in 164 B.C. after its desecration by the Syrian-Greeks in the Maccabean Revolt. The word Hanukkah means “dedication” in Hebrew and the holiday begins on the Hebrew calendar's 25th day of Kislev. To watch a History Channel informational video about this holiday, please click here. The first National Menorah lighting was in 1979 where President Jimmy Carter participated. The National Menorah is close to where the National Christmas Tree will be located after its national lighting ceremony December 9.We wish those celebrating Hanukkah a very happy holiday! The Leadership Institute is an educational foundation whose mission is to increase the number and effectiveness of conservative activists and leaders in the public policy process. FreedomWorks was instrumental in defeating Al Gore's infamous energy "Btu" tax and "HillaryCare" in the 1990s. Over the last ten years the organization has beaten the trial lawyer lobby by enacting sweeping tort reforms in states like Alabama and Florida. FreedomWorks also stopped billions in proposed tax hikes at both the state and federal levels. In 2006, their grassroots campaign was widely acknowledged as having defeated a proposed $130 billion asbestos trust fund. The Oregonian describes FreedomWorks as "a tightly run and well-financed national group."In order to ensure their leadership in the fight for freedom, FreedomWorks' tactics continually evolve: in the 1980s the organization pioneered direct marketing techniques that engaged grassroots citizens in policy change. In the early 1990s, FreedomWorks was an innovator in the use of message development and paid advertising to drive policy outcomes. Over the past 10 years, the organization created a "boots on the ground" strategy that puts real people in front of political decision makers back home. Today, major investments in FreedomWorks' online capabilities are building an active online community that will rival the likes of MoveOn.org. >

A Time of Thanks & Reflection
November 24, 2010, Arlington, VA--This Thanksgiving we stop working to reflect and give thanks with family and friends for the blessings of the past year. Read on for a Thanksgiving history lesson and a Leadership Institute reflection. The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of International Information Programs' project America.gov stated in an article, "Thanksgiving is popularly traced to a 1621 feast shared by the English Pilgrims who founded the Plymouth Colony (located in present-day Massachusetts) and members of the Wampanoag Indian tribe."The America.gov article continues by stating, "The Pilgrims had arrived in 1620, crossing the Atlantic Ocean to separate themselves from the official Church of England and practice freely their particular form of Puritanism. Arriving at Plymouth Colony too late to grow many crops, and lacking fresh food, the Pilgrims suffered terribly during the winter of 1620-1621. Half the colony died from disease. The following spring, local Wampanoag Indians taught the colonists how to grow corn (maize) and other local crops, and also helped the newcomers master hunting and fishing. The Wampanoag were a people with a sophisticated society who had occupied the region for thousands of years, says the National Museum of the American Indian. Because they harvested bountiful crops of corn, barley, beans and pumpkins the Pilgrims had much to be thankful for in the fall of 1621.""The legacy of giving thanks, particularly with a shared feast, has survived the centuries. Several U.S. presidents -- starting with George Washington in 1789 -- issued Thanksgiving proclamations, but it wasn't until President Abraham Lincoln's 1863 proclamation that Thanksgiving became an annual national holiday. He called for it to be celebrated on the last Thursday of November.""A 1941 congressional resolution moved it to the fourth Thursday to assure a longer post-Thanksgiving, pre-Christmas shopping season in years when there are five Thursdays in November," the America.gov article said. And now, we give thanks. We thank all the folks that are volunteering this holiday in serving a meal to another--a friend, a homeless individual, a widow. We thank all those in uniform that are away from family and friends this Thanksgiving sacrificing for our liberty and freedom. We thank LI donors, supporters, and friends for making the mission of training conservative leaders possible. We thank our fellow conservative organizations that share similar passions and the vision LI so ardently pursues. We thank LI volunteer faculty for bringing their professional experiences to our schools and in training new conservative leaders. We thank those that ran for office this election cycle and their staff that poured themselves into the campaigns, seeing to it that conservative causes are represented at the university, local, city, state, and national levels.Take time to pause, reflect and give thanks with loved ones this holiday season. We at LI wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving! The Leadership Institute is an educational foundation whose mission is to increase the number and effectiveness of conservative activists and leaders in the public policy process.
