Online Training: Introduction to Photography

On Wednesday May 10, 2017

What you will learn

You have the ability to take beautiful photos … if you understand how to apply the right techniques. In this fun, hands-on introduction to photography, you'll demystify your DSLR camera and learn how to take consistently good-looking and compelling photos.

A DSLR camera is not required, but many lessons will reference it, so it will be helpful. You must have a purchased or free trial download of Adobe Lightroom for photo editing.

Understanding Your Camera

Learn how to use your DSLR camera with confidence -- and finally understand what all the buttons mean. You'll learn how to:

  • interpret and use the modes and buttons on your DSLR;
  • choose the right settings for every event; and
  • understand photography gear jargon (e.g. f/2.8 or prime lens).

Photographing People and Events

A picture can be worth a thousand words with the right planning and skills. Learn how to take top-notch photos of your next event. Specifically, you'll learn how to:

  • understand what makes photos “work” for headshots, candid pictures, and events;
  • develop a plan for the next event you plan to photograph; and
  • make the best of bad lighting, a reality at most political events.

Photo Editing

Learn how to edit your photos quickly and easily using Adobe Lightroom, a program commonly used by professional photographers. You'll learn how to:

  • fix common challenges with lighting or photo angles;
  • start developing your own photo style – and analyzing others'; and
  • correct four very common problems with photos straight from the camera.
