Is anyone following you?No, no, this is not some Gnomes of Zurich super-duper conspiracy email.I mean politically ... is anyone following you?Because if no one is following you, YOU ARE NOT A LEADER.And if you are not a leader, then you are not doing what is needed to make a difference.Leadership has three components: Planning, Preparing and Acting.Take a minute to think about each one.PLANNINGGeneral Dwight Eisenhower said, "In war, plans are useless, but planning is essential."So what is planning?Planning is researching a problem, determining a solution and figuring out what needs to be done to achieve the desired outcome.Pin-headed academics, think-tankers and bloggers for the most part camp out here. Endlessly debating and explaining ad nauseum what MUST be done. Unfortunately, since they are not leaders, they begin and end here and little or nothing is achieved.PREPARINGPreparing is the most neglected component of political leadership.Preparing is assembling the concrete things needed to achieve a plan.At the top of the list in politics is money. The old political saying remains all-too-true, "You cannot save the world, if you cannot pay the bills." And almost EVERYTHING costs money: Computers, pizza for volunteers, paper, postage, gasoline ... you get the point.Next after money -- lists. Lists of people who are interested -- or may be interested -- in the issue, movement or candidate you are preparing to help.Then comes everything else you may need (note how many cost money, or its cousin, time spent learning): Computers, programs, graphic art skills, writing, paper, postage, volunteers, opposition research, etc.Bureaucrats live in the preparing world.Too few political leaders spend their time and talent in this critical area. Through 25 years of political activism, I will say without hesitation that "the failure to prepare is the primary cause of political failure."ACTINGAh, yes, good old action. Let's go DO SOMETHING, baby, RIGHT NOW!Bringing your plans and preparations together in real time, at just the right moments and in just the right ways is what action is all about.Many would-be political leaders freak out here. You have to SPEND the money, TARGET the Senator, MAIL the letters, SEND the emails ... and you have to do it NOW. Not ready? Too bad. Not sure? Tough. Too tired? Get over it. Kids have (gag) soccer? They miss it.On the other hand, politicians LOVE to act. Never mind that they have no plan and made no preparations, they are ready to go do something, right now. TeenPact students receive a complimentary copy of Ronald Reagan's Hand of Providence after a full week of Leadership Institute campaign training.September 22, 2010, Arlington, VA—This past week the Leadership Institute hosted and trained 64 high-school teens in the public policy process in order to become effective campaign activists.The Road to the White House training series consisted of lectures and applied exercises. Exercises included: Developing a campaign organization through selection of effective staff; Creating a message and campaign theme based on candidate bios; and How to design effective campaign literature.“LI's role was to design and tailor the curriculum to fit the needs of teenagers, providing them experience in political techniques and strategies,” said LI Coordinator for TeenPact Tyler Foote.LI's Steven P.J. Wood Building houses in its bottom floor several dormitories where these teens stayed throughout the duration of their training. Students were from over 15 states.Participants traveled throughout the District of Columbia to sight see in the morning and returned to LI for lectures in the afternoon, hands-on exercises in the evening and a devotional at night.TeenPact Vice President of Operations Lydia Shanks said, “As I talked to the students and observed them over the week, the students walked away with accessibility to politics. LI's grassroots training is something unique and we are very grateful for it.”“We aim to mobilize students to be good leaders wherever they are,” Shanks said. “When we have 65 students excited and jazzed about what God can do through them, we are thankful. This week gave students the tools for action and involvement in the future.”On the last evening, teens participated in a mock election where six presidential candidates with the help of their campaign staff gave speeches and answered questions from mock voters. The voters—LI staff—voted for Stephen Morrison, a 19-year-old from Savannah, Georgia who is a sophomore at Liberty University and a fourth year veteran at TeenPact.“One of my goals is to run for office one day, and this week is an encouragement thing—it makes me realize that this is really doable,” Morrison said. Braving a spring Rockies blizzard and several closed highways, 26 students showed up for the Leadership Institute's latest Rocky Mountain Youth Leadership School in Laramie, Wyoming on Saturday and Sunday, April 24th and 25th. Although predominantly comprising students from the University of Wyoming, the school included parents, activists, students from other colleges, and one very brilliant home schooler. One student drove eight hours from Montana, and an LI donor drove over six hours from Utah to attend the training. The instructors were Michael Thompson from L.I.'s Campus Services Program and Christopher Doss from the Grassroots Training Division.>

Patrick Henry College undertook a weekend retreat as part of its Leadership Program for students studying Public Policy and Government. Twenty students made the trek up into the Catoctin Mountains west of the college where they spent the weekend in the college's lodge, the Bear's Den. On Saturday, March 13, 2010, the Leadership Institute's Grassroots Training Division presented a training module in the form of an interactive workshop for the students, an innovative experience for both the students and the LI instructors.>

A total of 120 participants took part in the two-day Grassroots Campaign School at Liberty University on March 6-7, 2010. They included repeat attendees from previous schools at Liberty, and several who had found the school on the Leadership Institute web site. The study reports fully on the giving of all 1,036 business-related PACs which gave $25,000 or more to federal election candidates in the 2007-2008 election cycle. The study reveals the major business PACs' giving patterns to several types of political candidates including Republicans, Democrats, conservatives, liberals, incumbents, and challenger candidates. These giving trends enable legislators, candidates, business leaders and journalists to discover the political giving of corporate America. The report tracks and ranks the giving patterns of business PACs by the recipients' political affiliation and category “Candidates and campaigns for the upcoming 2010 elections could target those major business PACs most likely to contribute to them,” said Morton C. Blackwell, president of The Leadership Institute. “They could focus on ‘hunting where the ducks are.'” The report includes the addresses of all 1,036 PACs studied. The study also allows employees, corporate stockholders, and business association members to compare their association PACs with other PACs. Investors at all levels can learn about and influence their business PAC's giving to U.S. House and Senate candidates. “Customers can see the political giving of corporations with which they have done business,” said Blackwell. “They could change vendors if they didn't agree with their political giving pattern.” This is the latest of the biennial PAC reports released by The Leadership Institute. ###
