Online Training: Introduction to Social Media

6 days until event begins

What you will learn

Demystify social media and get all your questions answered … from the comfort of your own home. The Leadership Institute's Introduction to Social Media offers fun, live, online training that you can sign into from anywhere in the world.

Social Media and Politics (6pm - 7pm ET) -- In this fun, easy-to-follow introduction, you'll follow social media's development from its origins in ancient Rome (really!) to its effect on media and the public policy process today. You'll learn:
  • what social media today has and has not changed about the public policy process;
  • how campaigns and media organizations use social media today;
  • a framework that will help you analyze new social media platforms – and determine how they can help you reach your goals; and
  • three common mistakes activists make with social media – and how you can avoid them.
Facebook 101 (7pm - 8pm ET) -- Facebook is our digital public square. Whether you're a brand new Facebook user or a long-time fan, you'll learn how to use Facebook for politics – and understand how campaigns, organizations, and the media are using it too. You'll learn:
  • how to create Facebook content that people want to share;
  • how media companies, organizations, and political campaigns are using the platform;
  • Facebook's available tools and how best to use them, including pages, groups, and its “town hall” suite; and
  • how to talk about politics on Facebook so that people actually “listen.”
Twitter 101 (8pm - 9pm ET) -- Twitter is one of the most fun tools for political junkies, but also one of the most daunting for new users. Learn how to navigate Twitter like a pro to get news as it breaks and help shape media coverage for your cause or organization. You'll learn:
  • how reporters and media companies use Twitter – and what that means for media coverage of the public policy process;
  • how to find Twitter accounts that you want to follow;
  • exactly what all the symbols (e.g. @, #) mean; and
  • how activists like you use Twitter to advance their principles.
