The gun raffle is a good event for Second Amendment groups, general conservative groups, and libertarian groups to gain publicity and raise awareness about current Second Amendment and gun rights issues.

It is important to keep in mind, however, that most colleges and universities will not allow you to bring a gun on campus even for a raffle.  Use a picture of the gun instead. 

This event can be held any time of the year, but you might want to time it to coincide with major Second Amendment news.  For example, if the Supreme Court or the high court of your state were to hand down a decision on gun rights, your raffle would be appropriate because Second Amendment rights would already be a topic of campus conversation.  You might also consider holding it at an Activities Fair or other major campus event sure to attract large numbers of attendees.

HOW TO TAKE ACTION

1. Collect the materials needed for the event.  You should acquire the gun you wish to raffle and a high quality description and photo album of it, informational flyers, poster boards and other supplies for signs, raffle tickets, and a table.  A local gun store should be able to assist you in choosing an appropriate weapon for the raffle.  You might also consider including a small supply of ammunition with the gun.

2. Reserve space on campus for the event. Contact the Student Activities Office and attempt to reserve the most high-traffic area available.  If you are denied a site on campus, hold the event in a nearby public location which students often frequent.

3. Invite allied organizations.  Ask other pro-gun rights organizations on campus or in the outside community to contribute to the purchase of the gun or set up an informational booth by your table.  This is a great way to strengthen cooperation between different groups in the gun rights movement, and to increase attendance, volunteers, and raffle ticket purchases in the form of members of the other groups.

4. Advertise!  Success depends on how well you publicize your event, so you should advertise early and often.  This doesn’t necessarily mean paid advertising; “earned media” may work even better for you.  Click here to learn several important publicity measures to use before, during, and after the event.

5. Create a schedule.  Have members of your group volunteer as much time as possible to man your informational table and sell raffle tickets.

6. Prepare for opposition.
